The Man in the Fringe Castle

Artist, Author, illustrator, inspiration, P.E. Musik, Prompts, Writer's Circle, young adult books

I’ve been asked a few times, “what happened to the PEM Writer’s Circle on Blogger?
I did put it aside and, to those who enjoyed it, I’m sorry for the delay in getting it up and running again. Unfortunately, the Blogger version had problems. I’m not sure what Google had in mind when they pulled the apps and made it near impossible to access the Blogger accounts from any browser.
Solution; Hello, WordPress!
So, here we are in new year, full of P&V and eager to tap out a tale.
I watched an Episode of “The Man in the High Castle” the other day. If you haven’t seen, or read, the story, it’s basically an alternate-reality tale where the Nazi’s and the Japanese have won the war and the United States is a very different land. Somehow, filmed communications from an alternate universe, where the Allies have won the war, are making their way to this Nazi-Japanese controlled universe.
It got me thinking about Altered Universes. There have been a a lot of great stories rooted in this idea. There was even a TV show, called the FRINGE, that was all about this sort of thing.Comic book universes survive generation after generation relying on this same concept. The Superman Origin Story begins again on “another Earth” and we see the hero’s path unfold in a slightly different way.
Not surprisingly, the Star Trek franchise was re-booted using this device.
Then there is the “Mandela Effect.” Have you heard of this? The name of the theory comes from the fact that many people around the world are convinced they remember Nelson Mandela dying while still in prison in the 80’s. It is one of many collective false memories. Some believe they have detected a parallel universe or after effect of time travel interference. Or is it just their memory playing tricks on them? There are large groups of people swearing up and down that some significant event occurred but now, there is no evidence that it did.
So… it’s 2017. Is all as it should be?
Do you feel something shifted?
Do you have a feeling in your gut that our direction was somehow altered?
Did history unfold in completely different way in some Fringe Universe?

Your task, if you choose to accept it: Write a brief Newspaper style report that represents an event that occurred in our alternate Fringe Universe.

Come Home Happy

  1. MAN LOOSES WIFE FIVE YEARS AFTER HER DEATH

    January 31st, 2017

CHICAGO – Avatron CEO, Michael Taylor, famous for introducing tru-memory banks to the world seven years ago has lost his battle to resurrect his wife’s memory files. During a dramatic televised event, Taylor inserted the tru-memory medallion containing his wife’s memories into the Avatron 3210S module and, along with millions of viewers, held his breath as his assistant, Jeffery Dass, initiated the countdown. It was to be a countdown to disappointment.

Seven years ago, before speaking her last words, Alexa Taylor allowed her memories to be mapped to the newly designed tru-memory medallion designed by her husband and a team of forty-two of the best scientific minds. She embedded the medallion with a password. As she was writing this password down, she passed away to the horror of her family and friends. It has long been rumored that what she has written down was “itis.” Having been a scholar of world religions, some believed she may have used the name of a long forgotten, ancient God or Goddess.

As many who have already purchased the tru-memory system know, the memory banks are password protected by the person whose mind is accessed as per the laws associated with life memory. Once the password is embedded the person whose mind has been accessed can freely give the password to anyone they desire. Attempts to access these memories using a false password are limited to five. On the fifth attempt, the banks will be erased.

Micheal Taylor was only given a partial password and has spent the last several years trying to determine the full password to access the memories of his deceased wife.

The failure to access the memory banks comes with a final blow; the revelation of the real password.

    The world watched Michael Taylor tap the password into the keypad, and waited. There was a low humming sound and something clicked. The screen in front of Taylor and Dass turned blue and then faded to black. Three words appeared;

    It-is-okay.

As of the morning, Michael Taylor’s whereabouts are unknown.

Jeffery Dass is acting head of the Avatton empire.

Public services Alexa Jane Taylor will be held at the Bacharach memorial on Saturday at 1pm.

  2. Cool concept and execution with just a touch of intrigue. I wonder if Jeffery Dass planned the whole thing from the beginning. Good story John!
